Northern Lights Chapter (#0223), USAWOA 27 Feb 09
1. The Northern Lights USAWOA Chapter convened 12 Feb 09 in the National Guard Armory RM# B205 at Ft. Richardson, AK.
2. A quorum was present with 13 members (3 officers) and nine guests. All of the guest were given information on how to join our membership.
3. Chapter President Randy Templeton called the meeting to order at 1206 hrs. Because of all of the new faces to our meeting everybody introduced themselves.
4. Invocation. West McCollum, our chaplain, led us in prayer before the meeting.
5. Pledge of Allegiance was completed.
6. The Minutes are located on the website and available for all members to read before the meeting. The Chapter Secretary Jeff Brehmer briefly discussed the January minutes and a motion was made to approve the minutes by Roger Stickney and seconded by Al Ostrowski.
7. Treasurers Report for January is also present on the website, but was briefly discussed by the Chapter Treasurer Ordia Brown. A motion to accept the report was made by Erin O’Hara and seconded by Michelle Sprosty.
8. Committee Reports –
a. Membership Committee Chair Curtis Cain was not present. Randy Templeton expressed to the members the importance of bringing in new members.
b. Asst VP Reserve/National Guard Affairs Jeff Arnold talked about future deployments in the National Guard. He also explained why the Coast Guard Warrants could not attend the meeting. He talked about the TRICARE for life message sent out by the Chapter Secretary. For this meeting we had a very good attendance from the National Guard and 100% of the Reserve Warrant Officers attended.
c. Memorabilia Custodian – Michelle Sprosty went into detail on some of the ideas she has for memorabilia for the Chapter. She had some examples of what could be put on shirts that represents the Northern Lights Chapter. She felt things like coins, hats, and shirts with our chapter symbol would sell and build up our Chapters funds. It will take some chapter money to build our initial memorabilia.
d. By-Laws review committee – Al Ostrowski asked for help from the chapter members to review the By-Laws. Dave Deming and Roger Stickney volunteered to help him and by April’s meeting he will have the By-Laws ready to present to the chapter.
9. Unfinished Business –
a. Asst VP for Retired affairs – Chapter President Randy Templeton is still looking for a volunteer. Briefly discussed the Town Hall meeting with Senator Mark Begich.
b. Community Support – We are still looking for a lead.
c. Building new membership in the chapter was already briefed by Randy Templeton during the committee reports.
d. Corporate sponsorship – We are still looking for business rules.
10. New Business –
a. Fundraising - Ordia Brown presented some ideas on how the chapter can bring some money in to support the community and build up our memorabilia.
(1) Bagging at the commissary – He talked to the head bagger, but they will not be able to accommodate us at this time.
(2) Tupperware would be another way of bringing in money if chapter members want to sell this type of items. The chapter would make 40% of the total sales and there is no upfront cost or minimum sale amount.
(3) All-U-Can-Eat Spaghetti at Guido’s Pizza. The chapter has an opportunity to make a substantial amount of money by selling tickets for the All-U-Can-Eat Spaghetti. We would have to sell at least 150 tickets at a cost more than $4.75. The additional tickets sold and money for the tickets will go to the chapter. This is a great way for us to work together as a chapter to make money that will eventually go back to the community.
b. Next Annual Meeting of the Members – Randy Templeton talked about this year’s AMM in Utah. This chapter is in our region and we should try to provide something for them to raffle and maybe a contribution. We will discuss this more during our EXCOM meeting and address this more during the next members meeting.
c. Elections - Start thinking about new officers for the May elections.
11. Announcements. No announcements.
12. Raffle. The 50-50 raffle was held at the end of the meeting with a total contribution of $80.00, which half of it goes to the winner Dave Deming.
13. Adjournment – Chapter President requested a motion be made to adjourn the meeting. The motion was made by Dave Deming and seconded by Clay Burton. The meeting adjourned at 1245. The next meeting is scheduled for 12 March 09 in the National Guard Armory RM# B203 at Ft. Richardson, AK.
