Northern Lights Chapter (#0223), USAWOA 9 Oct 08
1. The Northern Lights USAWOA Chapter convened in the Wilderness Inn Dining Facility at Ft. Richardson, AK. Chapter President Randy Templeton called the meeting to order.
2. A quorum was present with 9 members (4 officers) and one guest.
3. The meeting was called to order at 0750 hrs.
4. Invocation. No volunteer was present. The chapter is still working on getting a Chaplain.
5. Pledge of Allegiance was completed.
6. The Minutes were on the website and were supposed to have been read by each member before the meeting. The secretary Jeff Brehmer briefly discussed the September minutes and a motion was made by Dave Deming and seconded by Al Ostrowski.
7. Treasurers Report for September was also present on the website but was briefly discussed by the treasurer Clay Burton. A motion to accept the report was made by Al Ostrowski and seconded by Jose Marquez.
8. Committee Reports –
a. Membership Committee Chair Curtis Cain is putting some ideas together to bring in more members. He talked about having a booth at the Elmendorf PX/BX. He is asking for ideas and help from the members on how we can bring in more members. Jeff Brehmer talked about the membership drive/picnic we should have next summer. This can be brought up as new business when we get closer to the summer. The Chapter President announced that our chapter won the award for most increase in membership in our region. The Western Region will send us a $50 check.
b. Asst VP Reserve/National Guard Affairs Jeff Arnold could not be present for this meeting.
9. Unfinished Business –
a. USAWOA Northern Lights Chapter Website. Website went live on 10 Sep and the chapter finished tied for second in our region for the best website. Curtis Cain and Randy Templeton talked about adding more information to the website. This website will get even better with chapter members participation/suggestions. This will no longer be unfinished business.
b. Asst VP for Retired affairs – Still looking for a volunteer. Randy talked to a couple of members so they can consider this position.
c. Community Support – Chapter VP Erin O’Hara talked about how this chapter is going to support the community and who we want to support. The community support survey that was sent out and voted on came down to four places we will support; Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, VFW, and American Legion. Next we have to decide how to support each organization. Because of the limited attendance the courses of action will be put on the website. Every member needs to go to the chapter website and pick one of the three courses of action.
d. Memorabilia Custodian – As stated last month this chapter needs to establish memorabilia that is unique to Alaska and can show off our Chapter. We talked about ways of getting it started but we are still looking for a volunteer. Randy is going to talk to the Aberdeen Chapter about purchasing some belt buckles in bulk and getting a discount. The Chapter memorabilia custodian should talk to the local PX/BX vendors and find a place to design a shirt unique to this chapter. Soon we will do community support activities but we do not have anything that shows our chapter.
10. New Business –
a.– By-laws review committee – It is necessary to have a committee established to review and make recommendations to our current chapter by-laws. The officers have looked over the document and made corrections but it is necessary to have them looked at by a committee and brought to the membership for approval.
b.- Fund raising; how do we want to do this? This was talked about during the community support area and will be included in the courses of action.
c.- New Treasurer needed before Jan 09. Clay Burton is deploying in January 09 and we need a replacement. If no one fills the position then the secretary will take both positions.
11. Announcements. Randy Templeton is being promoted to CW5 on 23 Oct at the Fireside Rm (BLD 56) - 1400 hrs. Please join him for his last promotion. Steve Mason will be promoted to CW4 next month – more to follow.
12. Raffle. The 50-50 raffle was held at the end of the meeting with a total contribution of $ 49.00, which was shared by the Chapter and Erin O’Hara.
13. Adjournment – Chapter President requested a motion be made to adjourn the meeting. The motion was made by Jose Marquez and seconded by Dave Deming. The meeting adjourned at 0818. The next meeting is scheduled for 13 Nov 08 - 1130 hrs at the National Guard Armory. The room numbers is TBD but bring your own lunch or buy it in the cafeteria.
